Q of the Week : How much sleep do you get?

I think all moms are sleep deprived.  Darah wrote about it last week, I muttered about it recently too, and it seems to be universal.  Moms just don’t get enough sleep.  We can talk about how to be more efficient, drop the non-essentials, and slice and dice it however we please but there really aren’t enough hours in the day (and half the night) to get through the list of things we’d like to do.  Need to do.  Want to do.

I find it harder in summer, as the days are longer, the kids get less sleep, and I have fewer kid-free hours at night to get my things done.  I also don’t sleep very well in hot weather (hello 92 degrees inside at 8am today!) so my nights aren’t too productive in the rest department.  I need more sleep than I used to, and don’t recover as fast when pull an almost-all-nighter anymore.

Speaking of all-nighters, I was bound and determined to watch a Jane Austen movie this weekend, and sent my hubby to rent Pride and Prejudice on Saturday night.  The Colin Firth one of course, I do like my fix now and then :).  I didn’t check the Special Edition box too well in my midnight bleariness (no I hadn’t even opened the wine yet), and we popped it in.  Just in case you’re wondering?  It’s 5.5 hours long, and sunrise is about 5:15 at this time of year.  The birds start around 3:30, and it took me 15 minutes to figure out they weren’t part of the soundtrack!  Needless to say I didn’t get enough sleep.

To finally answer my own question, I get about 5-6 hours a night.  I often manage to squeeze in a catnap somewhere during the day for an extra 15 minutes, I find them hugely helpful and much more effective than coffee in the long run.  I do love my caffeine in the morning though.

How much do sleep you average a night?  Do tell!
